The PS3 dev kit had hot swappable hard drives. One to mirror the internal hdd drive, and the other pretended to be the disc drive, since most people didn't have access to blu-ray disc writers back then (they were several grand and not yet public).

Also, it should be noted, that PS3 dev kit is the "small" version.
