I think they have compatability modes/layouts for maya converts, don't they?

There are.. and I'd probably customize those when I get the handle on it. I don't use maya's default. I just don't know best practice for bringing in a rig and animating a new scene. Then I couldn't find why my textures weren't rendering properly. I'd really like to learn it tho

yeah, one of the biggest hurdles is that you absolutely need a tutorial to understand how to interact with things. It starts to make sense after some time, and boy is it better than it used to be!
