To continue being a noodge.. I also saw someone misunderstand appeal in animation as meaning simply polished or attractive art direction. They complained that it limited anim and left no room for non conventional character design.
You can ignore all other anim principles, they’re just helpful little guidelines to help artists communicate. Appeal, to me, being the most subjective, means making good choices. Char choices, posing, timing whatever... as long as it works with what you’re saying to your audience
