Using Maya layers to maintain all assets of a first-person suite in a single file is a smart system but gets a little slow. After working in MoBu for a few months I find its Take system would be great as a replacement. I know something akin to Story is in Maya 18 but are Takes?

No. Takes are not in Maya 2018. Ubisoft gave a GDC Anim tools talk this year that had an elegant solution, essentially using layers (hiding and showing to represent a given ‘take’).

Yeah, as Dan pointed out we solved the problem using layers, but had to hack them a bit to avoid the slow down of the scene. And then built a whole system on top of it. We're testing the time editor right now, but it's not a solution yet due to how it handles clips and timeline
