Really proud to show off a tiny site put together from the data-thon, where a team of Pittsburgh collaborators merged comptuer vision and datavis expertise with art historical questions:

Like Matt says, THATCamps were pivotal for me too (and that’s coming from two folks who were doctoral students at a uni with historically strong local DH). In making friends & meeting collaborators, my 1st exposure to HTML5, getting to run Games w/.

  4. With a little nudge from my department chair and I went to THATCamp Prime and I’ve never come back from an event with more ideas and excitement.

  5. In 2013 I was nearing the end of my phd coursework and feeling truly despondent about the spectre of writing a proposal for my dissertation. Nothing in the field seemed to be the right combo of interesting, feasible, and novel.

Ah it is just too bad that Congress has failed. If only Murkowski, a Senator, could do something about it!

I just think it’s missing out on the fullest possibilities that computer-generated artefacts like vector spaces can offer if we engage with them as new representations in their own right, not something to be boiled down unsatisfactorily

this isn’t to say a human-computer loop for generating “traditional” archival representations like named entitites is useless - it can be really good (emphasis on the HUMAN in that loop, tho)

but those remediations actually provide a NOVEL representation - to be used in parallel with your finding aids, your hierarchies, your name authorities

but the more interesting projects I think engage with, say, image vector spaces, as forms of archival representation themselves. Yes, those vectors need to be remediated into e.g. nearest neighbor search to be legible to humans

sure, you can use these new tools to help you fill out existing forms of archival representation (named entities, for example), in ways that are often disappointing compared to human cataloging

Doing a bit of crash reading in archival literature is helping me articulate why I find “automated metadata generation” (all by itself) a dull and deficient way to think about ML opportunities in cultural heritage

1st use case of our : helped a data viz problem in R with excel data! Major take aways: 1)Convert to csv; 2)always check data types and hidden white spaces before writing any code; 3)no whitespaces in variable names. Simple best practices goes a long way!
