1/2 Surprising endorsement from someone whose job is incentivising people to start UK companies! Can you enlighten us on “lots of better ways” and where is the government’s undertaking that the gains from stopping ER will be put towards them?

2/2 Confusing but strong signals from the gov at the moment that entrepreneurs should look elsewhere - ER changes, IR35 and of course Brexit making it harder to recruit. Could you enlighten us
@matthewclifford about where the treasury are planning to spend these ER gains? - Još 5 drugih odgovora

Agree to an extent. The point of the policy to encourage/reward success. We did also create seis and eis to assist early stage. Ent relief is merely moving the location/timing of tax. But totally see why it’s been scrapped.

EIS/SEIS are great and I think make a big difference :)

I think we are missing a bigger framework for this government’s entrepreneurship policy, from seed to scale. Wasn’t in the manifesto and haven’t heard anything since. In that context, focusing on cutting ER with only perfunctory consultation strikes me as counterproductive.

Gestalt thinking there. Good point

Agree Matt. Entrepreneurs don’t build for tax breaks. The risk taking, sweat and tears are all done before a founder even learns about it existing. Angel investors however (who new enterprises rely on for the riskiest seed stages) definitely invest more with SEIS and EIS.

Trump showed that tax relief made no difference to investment. It is only a bung. Scrap entrepreneurs relief now.
