Guide to iOS estimated passcode cracking times (assumes random decimal passcode + an exploit that breaks SEP throttling): 4 digits: ~13min worst (~6.5avg) 6 digits: ~22.2hrs worst (~11.1avg) 8 digits: ~92.5days worst (~46avg) 10 digits: ~9259days worst (~4629avg)

In practice (given the apparent limitations of current iOS attacks) it’s probably fine to use an alphanumeric passcode. It may be very secure. The real question is whether it’s worth the hassle of using the non-numeric keypad.

So in summary: random (long) numeric passcodes may be a more ergonomic choice for a given security level, especially if you force yourself to memorize the thing over a week or two (even if that involves carrying a post-it during that time.) But do whatever works for you.

What about stuff that isn’t strictly random, but is constructed from phrases that have meaning to the owner – as good as random realistically? What if there are symbols and password is between, say, 15 and 20 characters? (Not kidding, mine is somewhere within those conditions.)

All that stuff may work well until someone knows you really well. Maybe it’s good, maybe it isn’t.

I love to use them on my devices. The problem is when you use them for online systems you access with different keyboard layouts. It's a pain in the ass to punch Unicode chars by heart.

Maybe the right approach would be if iOS defaulted to an option where it generates a passphrase?

A while back, I know
@KeePass changes their password rating strength algorithm to try and reflects some of that. <https://keepass.info/help/kb/pw_quality_est.html …> Do you have any suggestions? I use a diceware passcode on my iPhone. It really sucks, especially when it rains.
