I suspected this was true ever since Apple released iCloud Keychain and did nothing interesting with it. Government pressure works.https://www.reuters.com/article/us-apple-fbi-icloud-exclusive-idUSKBN1ZK1CT …

Nothing you can do about it... except not use cloud backups? :P Also I’m sure there’s completely innocent, non-nefarious reasons that iTunes now defaults to “back up to iCloud” even if you’ve never done that and always back up to your computer... right?

Having recently gotten a new Mac, I think it's getting harder to get all the settings correct such that Apple doesn't come get it even if you don't want that backup.

And often on ios upgrades, I have to redisable backups and have no idea how much was already sent

Wait a minute, they never implemented encrypted iCloud backups? I've thought for a couple years now that was completed

Wait, but aren't unencrypted backups *functionally inferior*? At least they were, so far (only encrypted backups contained login/password data, etc)... So they're just flat out downgrading their capabilities?

The solution is to disable iCloud backups, and use libimobiledevice or iTunes to back up locally with encryption. https://www.libimobiledevice.org/ Unfortunately there is pressure from China as well, where they have handed over iCloud keys.

The option to encrypt your phone’s backup is in there with the option to back your phone up to your “iTunes computer”. Which maybe could be separate from your “web browser computer”. It’s all not great but may be sufficient.

Somehow I remember that backups are encrypted but Apple is able to intercept backup process. So Apple can’t access backups that have been made already but if the device ever starts a new backup, they can access it. I’ll try to find a source.
