Don't worry about the coronavirus right now. Worry about the flu, which has killed ~10,000 Americans since October. “The likelihood of an American being killed by the flu compared to being killed by the coronavirus is probably approaching infinity.”https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-01-31/flu-coronavirus …

I think the unknown about the coronavirus freaks people out, but there's also not much you can really do about it at the moment, whereas there is much more ever-present boring killer flu that is everywhere and which can absolutely save lives just by going and getting a flu shot.

Also not to put too utilitarian a point on this, but if there is a coronavirus pandemic, you're gonna do our flu-fighting, life-saving, resource-limited healthcare system a HUGE solid by not getting hospitalized for seasonal flus that existing vaccines can protect you from.

My grandfather died in the 1918-20 flu pandemic, the first deadly H1N1 flu virus, leaving my grandmother with 5 kids. My dad was 2 years old, never knew his father. Worldwide that virus infected 500 million, killed 50 million, out of a world population of less than 2 billion.

And, yes, I get a flu shot every year. Even if it’s only partially effective, it’s better than going around with no immunity at all.

CDC says 150,000 to 500,000 and about 12k in the U.S. Which is around the same as normal seasonal flu. Health authorities at the time practically pleaded with journalists to include normal flu death rates to add context and calm people down.

The pandemic did start in North America, but it was in Mexico.

Wiki says Mexico. CDC says US. My money’s on US.

Oh I remember it -- we had a two-year old and we lined up, with about a thousand other people in a huge basketball arena in metro Detroit in order to all get the updated shot. Everyone was professional, but it was like something out a Will Smith / Bruce Willis pandemic movie.
