        @mattcutts Good info. What about using 301 redirects from dead product pages to category pages with similar products? Better than 404?

        @thomasbaugh I recommend that clients show out-of-stock product, and then cross-sell to similar/successor products. Lots of work tho.

        @mattcutts All 3 scenarios you cited are 404 responses? Plus a 404 handler, maybe "Unavailable after" pre-404 time, but all basically a 404?
