Folks who are leading or managing teams, how are you fostering a sense of community when folks are doing distributed work? What things have worked well for you or your team?

A lot of me (as manager) doing one-on-one check ins with people to make sure they're okay. We still have our full group lab meeting (of ~30 people) once a week via Zoom, and have tried to be a bit silly with things like "wear a hat" or such. We are even having a lab "outing" ...

with a puzzle event (we hired a puzzle maker to create a custom one) so that we can still celebrate our graduating seniors and do something fun as a group.

Allowing space for social connections (extended team mtgs, happy hours/coffee mornings, etc.), injecting fun (themes for your zoom backgrounds, etc.) and generally leading with empathy and focusing energy on encouraging others to do the same.

Regular check-ins are really important. Voice calls are good but video is way better for helping people to feel connected - it's amazing the difference just being able to look people in the eye. Visibility, predictability on work & projects is critical. 1/2

Setting norms about work hours and behavior. Let people know that it's ok to be a human and some days we just aren't very productive. Be open about realities and priorities. Always be willing to discuss shortcomings with processes and streamline when needed to suit the situation.

Thanks, Keri! Hi Matt! 👋🏼 I’ve actually been managing global distributed teams for almost 4 years now. I gave this presentation in September last year but it works great for this pandemic time too https://cmxhub.com/setting-up-your-distributed-global-community-team-for-success-jennifer-sable-lopez/ … hope it helps!
