I have gmail and my own domain name - but use my gmail 96%+ of the time.

I always use my own domain name as my email... because I'll NEVER lose it. I have backup/throwaway gmail accounts. I don't understand why people have their own domain for their site but use a gmail account for their email. They can use a forwarder.

I have a gmail address that gets used for online stuff, then a personal domain for personal e-mail (gmail forwards there, hosted on Fastmail) and work using Exchange.
