This story perfectly captures Jeff and Sanjay, their partnership, and some early days at Google: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/12/10/the-friendship-that-made-google-huge … @jsomers conveys Jeff's love of puns and Sanjay's calm. And it's the first official telling of the in-RAM index that I recall.pic.twitter.com/nEWAjrZA5k

I'm leaving out that one time that EricS talked about the in-RAM index by accident. I think a few folks chided him, he never mentioned it again, and nobody happened to pick up on the slip. (Memory-based searching is much faster than spinning disks.)

The story gets everything right, but brings up a lot of fond memories. Like, the March index seemed to be cursed each year? I think one year somebody reversed < and > and the index got built in reverse PageRank order? Yeesh. That was ugly.

And of the people in the story, Craig made fresh bread in the office & walked around the Zeroplex saying "breeeeeaaaaadddd." Bogdan was the roller hockey organizer. I used to joke that he could walk from his car into the office & find six things to be annoyed about on the way.

I hope that somebody gathers some of the early stories or an oral history at some point.

I remember going to Craig's house and opening a closet where there was a stack of the same bread maker. He bought spares of his favorite just in case they discontinued the machine.

Craig’s bread and code reviews were highlights of my time at @khanacademy for sure.
