    In conclusion: web development actually sort of sucked in 2005. It’s way better in 2020. PHP still rocks, but now it keeps the noise down after 10pm.

    Absolutely everything else is better, too. I don’t need to worry about IE6 murdering the site layout, and SASS makes organising styles far easier. The JS standard library has loads more features, so I don’t have to use jQuery to bridge gaps between different browsers.

    Hosting is also much more advanced. For example, with it’s easy to sync the contents of a GitHub repo to my web server on every commit, which makes keeping track of my thought process (and undoing bad changes) much simpler.

    First, PHP is better. The language requires far fewer hacks, and you don’t have to implement everything yourself – is full of well-written open-source code (including , the type checker I wish I’d had back then).

    PHP ain’t dead and, speaking as someone who created a whole lot of those websites in the mid-late 2000s, life is far better today (1 of 5)

    ~15 years ago, if you wanted a dynamic website with PHP, you installed a LAMP stack, wrote a few toy pages, uploaded the files to a $5 host, fiddled 30mins with htaccess (optional), and you were done. I don’t recall seeing anything close to this easy since then.
