If someone hacks your phone or reads over your shoulder, they can see your messages. On what planet has this JUST been revealed? A headline?

I wrote this because activists and journalists were panicking. Media cannot, should not, be this tech illiterate. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/09/opinion/the-truth-about-the-wikileaks-cia-cache.html …pic.twitter.com/i1LyABUCbs

Older, un-updated android phones are not secure. In infosec world, that is more mundane than saying the sky is blue. Reported endlessly!

If you don't understand the infosec field, talk to experts before parroting Wikileaks, or making big, sensational claims about it all.

Look, device insecurity is real. Lives are at stake. Most common threat is crude phishing. Like this.https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2017/03/azerbaijan-activists-targeted-by-government-sponsored-cyber-attack/ …

So it is damaging to be parroting sensationalist claims & frameworks about perhaps the ONE thing (encryption) that got more widespread.

So only newsworthy part of #Vault7 is that someone hacked the CIA. That's news. Rest: 1-not about encryption; 2-known; 3-misleading frame.

Not necessarily "older", since plenty of vendors sell brand new devices that are already way behind on security patches...

Yep. This, more than any intrinsic property, is the main reason why security folks say iOS is more secure - reliable update chain.

It’s also why I get nervous about gov’t requests to use updates as a spyware install vector. Trust in updates is ecological issue.

Updates really need to be uninvasive, well-tested / robust and avoid changing stuff for the sake of change too.

you can get speedy updates with unofficial Android, but you have to wreck boot security :/

You can't, because without vendor support proprietary components cannot be updated.
