I don't know when my inflammatory bowel disease will flare, I don't know when I'll be stuck in my bathroom all day. That's why I vote absentee in Massachusetts – I mail elections officials a form. They mail me a ballot. I fill it out when my disabilities allow.

Crohn's disease is, unquestionably, a disability within the meaning of all relevant federal laws. (I went to law school just to be sure.) These are some of the symptoms Crohn's (a kind of inflammatory bowel disease) causes me:https://twitter.com/mattbc/status/938530951528960000?s=20 …

This is what an Iowa caucus looks like: you must show up at a specified time, e.g. 7pm, in a specific location, and, stay for a lengthy amount of time (e.g. an hour)

My inability to do just what the Iowa caucuses demand is precisely why the Social Security Administration, despite my relatively young age, determined I meed the ridiculously stringent criteria for Social Security disability.

[cn shit, GI] Let me be blunt: the diarrheal symptoms of Crohn's means that unless you're going to have the caucuses in a giant bathroom, allow me to arrive whenever the hell I want, provide pedialyte and my heating pads, it won't be accessible to me.

[cn shit, GI] But even this hypothetical shitting-caucus wouldn't be accessible to me! Why not? Aggressive immunosuppresion! Crowds are a giant fucking threat to my health in cold and flu season.

Noah asks a great question I object to a mixed system, first, on at least two
#CripTheVote grounds a) secret balloting is imperative for the disability community – we know, all to well, that our folks will be coerced into changing their voteshttps://twitter.com/nberlat/status/1217929280065298433?s=20 …Show this thread -
b) a separate voting system for disabled Americans is not an equal voting system. We see, over and over, the disenfranchisement of marginalized voters by kyriarchy – particularly white supremacy doing its damnedest to lock voters of color out of democracy

And in this area, I take my lessons from the vital scholarship of Prof.
@sandylocks – we know that disabled voters of color will face even greater barriers.#CripTheVoteShow this thread -
There's another reason to oppose caucuses that has to do with the coercion that arises from the lack of a secret ballot. Beside the
#CripTheVote context mentioned up-thread, the strong form of the argument has to do with domestic / intimate partner - violence.Show this thread -
[cn DV/IPV] If you have meaningful experience with Domestic / Intimate Partner– Violence (as I do) caucuses are indefensible. Indefensible.

[cn DV/IPV] Caucuses are the antithesis of a secret ballot. A secret ballot for choosing elected government officials. Officials who will determine funding for things like domestic violence shelters, vote on laws about protecting victims of IPV, etc etc etc

[cn DV/IPV child abuse] If you've followed me on here for awhile, you will know there is nothing I care more about than child abuse. Nothing. By exposing voting choices to abusers' open gaze, caucuses play some role in enabling child abuse.

If the
@iowademocrats care about justice and accessibility and fairness more than they care about being first, then they will abandon the caucus system. Alternatively, we fix the courts and then sue
