Celeste's "Assist Mode" is such a clever way of making a difficult game accessible to a wider audience. It's framed perfectly too - not insulting, not condescending, just accepting.pic.twitter.com/errjcE5TcQ

If you find the game too fast paced? Play it at 80% speed. Getting frustrated from the time limit of holding onto walls? Turn on infinite stamina. Having trouble managing your air dashes? Give yourself some extra.

Lots of games would benefit greatly from letting players tailor their own difficulty, removing or toning down the parts of the game that they specifically have trouble with or don't enjoy.

Imagine being able to disable escort missions in an RPG. Or give yourself infinite ammo in a shooter. Or turn off combat entirely like some games are experimenting with now in a "story-only mode".

I hope lots of developers in the future look to this example and learn from it in their own games <3

Thanks for the awesome examples of other games that have features like this, keep them coming! Do not @ me with your lukewarm True Gamer takes though.

Anyone helpfully pointing out to me that "these are just cheat codes" is missing the important context that _these are not framed as cheating_. It's a totally valid way to play and beat the game. That framing makes a HUGE difference.

Ok straight off the top of my head, here's some Dark Souls Assist Mode options: - Infinite Stamina - Don't lose souls on death - Configurable Estus Flask charges - Straight Up Invincibility

I'm sure there's way more / better examples, but I haven't played Souls games much.

And if you think Dark Souls would be a worse game for including these options then stay the hell out of my mentions

Was really interesting to see this in the same press release as the Donkey Kong "Funky Mode". Both appear to try and make games more accessible.

Though the same release also showed the Dark Souls remaster on Switch, which seemed an odd juxtaposition.
