For what it's worth, a female friend of mine who lives in San Francisco says the city has _not_ gone to hell as of late. There's "no particular change." Anecdotal, I know. But worth noting given all the hype. She does not live in fear.

Anecdotally: I’m in my mid-to-late 20s and it’s *significantly* worse than it was when I moved here 6 years ago. I’m in a “nice” neighborhood, in a tourist-y area, and my female partner is uncomfortable walking to and from my house at night.

In my neighborhood I’ve witnessed an uptick in drug user, smash & grab car thefts, and general street crime. Others in my cohort notice the same thing — we notice more crime, it “feels” much worse than it was.

A few notes: 1) My friends, partner, and I are just individual data points 2) were all renters, so live in neighborhoods that are “affordable” (whatever that means in SF), and SF is very Balkanized socio-economically — I’m not sure where your contact lives

      3) I’ve noticed an uptick, so am in turn more conscious of my surroundings, so may be in my own positive feedback loop — but I can only report on how I and my cohort feels, and we all really feel like the DA (@chesaboudin) is not doing a good job lowering crime.

Did Boudin ever say he was going to reduce crime? That it was at all his goal? (serious question)

I’m not sure! I didn’t pay attention to the last election and didn’t vote (lesson learned — don’t tell my dad, he’d kill me!). But I’m more engaged now, and thought a DA would put more effort into prosecuting crimes. It seems like a lot of crime committed by is repeat offenders.

I am also being reactive, I suppose. I didn’t notice crime and felt safer in my community pre-COVID and pre-Chesa. Now, much less so.

Covid has caused a nation wide crime wave, and especially in cities, compared with cities in our local area crime is down historically in sf. #StandWithChesa because compared with our peers his policy is making our city safer!https://twitter.com/susieneilson/status/1378059503736778753?s=20 …

The broader point is D.A. policies don't appear to have the same effect on crime rates as bigger events like the pandemic and recession. See our chart on San Francisco vs. Sacramento - in Sac, with a more traditional D.A., assaults increased and murder rates increased more pic.twitter.com/U1yAj1Wbsg

Interesting — is there source data for this? I’m curious about count vs rate. It’s a hard ethical question to ascribe value to certain crimes increase/decrease: are we ok with some types being up and others being down? And is any 2021 info available?

It would also be interesting (but probably difficult/impossible) to understand if there is any current or historical underreporting. Overall, I’d say these issues make me happy I’m an average Joe and not a policy maker…ha!
