The courthouse arrest debate has so far been largely been between civil rights organizations and the federal government. But these arrests also routinely disrupt years of effort on the part of local police & prosecutors by detaining/deporting defendants, witnesses, & victims.

As if arresting people for non-criminal imm. violations while trying to appear as ordered to state courts weren't bad enough, remember that ICE tripled down on this practice in retaliation for MA highest court's ruling that "detainers" aren't warrants http://lawyerscom.org/immigration-enforcement-at-massachusetts-courthouses-a-growing-threat/ …

Prosecutors & public defenders joining against this practice w/in a week of the indictment of Newton judge Joseph for allegedly helping a defendant leave her courthouse w/out allowing ICE to arrest him sends a clear message--one I hope to see from *all* state law enforcement.

This isn't about Republicans or Democrats, ICE cooperating agreements or sanctuary cities, or really any other political issue. It's as simple as this: keep our courts safe and accessible for all. ICE can arrest anywhere else it likes, but courts can't keep functioning this way.

ICE's courthouse arrests: --cancel out work of local cops & DAs --keep non-citizens from seeking help in local courts --ends future immigration options when non-citizens are deported with open charges --denies justice to victims --denies justice to wrongfully-charged defendants

Keeping federal agents out of state courthouses is not necessarily a radical leftist position. If anything it's a traditionally conservative one which respects basic Constitutional federalism and the appropriate role of state and federal authorities.

#ICE VERY VERY pissed-off about this. The Judge Joseph & Court Officer indictment ALSO springs out of this EXACT issue.#ICE also refusing to bring defendants into criminal court for their cases. Have to file habeas cases.https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-shelley-joseph-legal-defense-fund … - 1 thêm trả lời

Yes. This is a direct infringement on states’ rights to conduct the adjudication of their own laws. This creates an illegal and unnecessary burden of fear in both civil and criminal law. A state or civic courthouse should be free of federal meddling, especially this.
