thank you for so perfectly encapsulating the issues with this movie. I would also add that it does nothing to make Mia a real person

it's a straight white male fantasy through and through. So much progress was made in film this year. La La Land was a big step back.
-
have met so many Sebastians in my life and they are obnoxious af. Musicsplaining in the industry is very real.

who in that movie is saving/preserving jazz? Don't say Gosling. A trendy jazz bar isn't saving shit
-
yeah that's what i was saying... the movie is implying that
-
I really don't see how it's implying that he's "saving" jazz. His club is successful but so are a bunch of other fad bars in LA
-
he WANTS to preserve it, sure, but outside of his bar where prob more than half of the people there don't truly care, jazz is niche
-
I should add that I agree to an extent about PoC characters in the film, but EVERONE in the film takes a backseat to the 2 leads
-
including Seb's sister, and JK Simmons, and Mia's roommates. In a romantic musical, every1 is window dressing except the 2 lovers
-
in this case, the 2 lovers happen to be beautiful straight white people (in most musical cases actually).
-
we can say they should have been black actors, or even a gay couple, and that would be a great thing for a modern musical to be

Seb's sense of purity isnt valorized unambiguously. Legend defends his syncretic and pop approach explicitly. They're both right.

totally fair to capture a character (Sebastian) who is enthralled by a notion of pure jazz. Plenty of weird white guys like that.

and the film is ambivalent about both Gosling's and Legend's attitudes towards music.

it's a wonderful thing that VW can play with African musical traditions. Or that Outkast can wear Ralph Lauren.
