I only tag authors when I give a 5/5, and I *never* expect a response. Some authors ignore; others appreciate the link.

Just to point out, ignoring doesn't mean the author doesn't appreciate it. It often means we don't quite know what to do and end up paralysed. I mean, what's the etiquette, right?

Totally depends on the author.
@neilhimself and@ChuckWendig both retweet posts like that. Many authors early in their careers appreciate the positive reviews. :) But I can see the awkwardness considering we're not supposed to respond to them. -
Why are authors not supposed to answer tagged tweets about them ?

Ok I'm really surprised by this. I tag authors in reviews (4/5 stars) and in currently reading posts. I never expect a reply although it's lovely if they do! Is it actually considered rude or just your personal preference?
-
Many writers find it pretty uncomfortable, in part because you never know which taggers are going to turn out to be the really entitled ones with no sense of boundaries. (It actually doesn't bother me much, but I have friends who are thrown off their game for days.)

Looks like different strokes for different folks, I became friends with several authors when I tagged them and told them how much I liked their works. I even met one of them when he visited our city for a literary meet and had coffee together. Wonder what's wrong in appreciating?
-
There's nothing wrong with appreciating, but check downthread for a lot of discussion on how it's super awkward to interact with reviews online due to social constraints on writers' behavior.

Wait, seriously - is it ok to tag an author with an "I loved it" post? Not a full review, just saying the reader enjoyed the book. If not, ok, but I'm still getting to know the rules & would like to avoid getting it wrong.pic.twitter.com/UtTRm8MRL9

I think it's fine to send a tweet or whatever saying "I loved the book," but tagging even positive reviews is awkward. Many of us feel like we have to engage, and it feels super weird only engaging with some readers, because there are always the jerks.
