World cities such as San Francisco and Toronto need to add millions of homes. This is possible by seeing the region as a fractal. Revised and republished for the new decade: A Fractal Solution to Regional Complexity and Governance – The Nature of Cities

This Iowa story is emblematic of the blind faith Americans have that they can solve political problems with technology. It’s autonomous electric cars for party primaries.

“The shape of networks shapes our experience of urban space, and these networks are fractal. Has there ever been an experiment with this kind of fractal landscape? I believe all unresolved local-regional standoffs are instances of such an experiment.”

Is it inspiration from nature or convergence? For example, the tree-shaped vault of Sagrada Familia was designed by adding little weights to hanged ropes, to study load distribution.

The military seems to have the best understanding of the value of exploiting good fortune/opponent misfortune without going through any chain-of-command for orders. I dream of agile evolving to mission-based software development.

A centralized government-led building style and a centralized market-led development style delivers a very similar end product, and it's not the one that people want.

Still one of the best sources on the question. WTF did written language do to us, anyway?

An aesthetic I want to see: Programmable Maximalism. I’m officially bored of minimalism. I want walls filled with lights, screens, and a bass thumping sound system. Always new. Always fresh. Always entertaining. Transporting you between worlds depending on the time of day.

“It’s evident that applying more power at one end of the scale produces a balancing reaction at the other end to neutralize that power, and everyone ends up wasting their energies in a cycle that produces no beneficial resolution.” Today:

"but it’s the emergent complexity as a system grows that bothers me the most. We do linear work, adding components to a system over time, but that results in a super-linear growth in complexity."

Maybe what we don’t see in nature documentaries is that the lion is doing the gazelles a favor by eating the jerk of the herd.

Surprise can be quantified in terms of relative change in assumptions. If everything you assumed turns to be wrong you get maximum surprise. If an event doesn't change any of your assumptions than it is non-informational.

“The problem to be solved is to create a geometry of the metropolis that is simultaneously local and regional, that allows local communities to grow through their own specific urban generators while it remains simple to launch and plan projects at the regional scale.

I really like the notion of the workplace as a village, literally layed out as such. The best villages grow organically and incrementally, and are always changing to meet current needs.

“A city should be governed at the scale of its most painful problem and highest priority. What makes this simple question create so much complexity is the enormous variation of what constitutes the most painful problem over the landscape, especially large metropolitan landscapes.
