I hope this syntax never get approved
Why? You will get used to it quickly and it is quite short. Alternatives were no better
It’s a smelly syntax. “why not” is a terrible argument in lenguage design. And we will pay it in the future.
Imo this sets a bad precedence (as well as the pipeline operator). I don’t want JS to become the next “an octopus made by nailing extra legs onto a dog”
I don't know what "smelly" syntax means, but this wasn't picked because "why not". TC39 went through all the other options and found this to be the best option. The alternative is to *not* have this feature.
My tone was probably not the best one, too emotional. What i meant with "why not" is the fact that the feature is added to the lenguage in first instance. So, not a fan of this feature as part of ECMAScript and worried about JS getting any feature because... why not
I like the feature and think it is needed, and I don't find .# any worse than ._ :) plus you don't need "this.", so it is quite short too
The not-needing-this is pretty nice, I will concede. Do non-members that start with # blow up, then?
`#` is not valid in identifiers, so that’s not a problem. Note that you do need `this.#foo` to refer to the field. Only its declaration doesn’t need this (just like public class fields).
Ahhh, well darn. Was hoping to get come up with a way to get rid of `this` long term for minification purposes.
Don’t worry about it; gzip already takes care of repetition.
