        Would use bytes. As IoT for example might have little memory. And would avoid returning constructed objects - to reduce GC stalls.

        This looks oddly familiar with my Node.js eyes :) It looks somewhat reasonable to also implement this in Node.js? Measuring memory usage across Node.js workers have been brought up as well in this collab summit.
