I just discovered that RegExp.escape had been dropped because it's not safe *if the surrounding regexp parts are bogus*. I'm sorry, what?

So we have a language where strings and numbers can be used through the addition operator, but a function that is reimplemented thousands of times gets shutdown because it might fail if their users write bogus programs?!
