IMHO, the question is where the complexity lies. With this proposal, the burden would be on browsers (most of it) and tooling (some of it). JavaScript developers would just flip a flag in their build config and reap the benefits.

Generally agree with where complexity should go but pushing it into tooling creates a different kind of complexity and we don't always provide developers with sensible defaults (currently reviewing a script where build process has delivered 600KB of inline source maps to prod)
