      I don't understand what actual concrete benefit there is to using .mjs on client-side JavaScript modules. It seems to only cause problems with tools that .js completely avoids. What's the specific upside?

      Well familiar with that recommendation :) I still don't see a concrete benefit for client-side libraries. The first point about knowing if it's a module just isn't relevant to any library I know of. They're all modules in source already.

      It’s not a benefit for libraries. It’s a benefit for human developers writing and reading source code. Node.js decided to have first-class .mjs support for modules, now and forever:https://github.com/nodejs/modules/pull/180 …

      It might become possible to use other extensions at the cost of yet-to-be-specified additional configuration.

      Tools are increasingly adopting .mjs as a signal that the source file is a module instead of a classic script, reducing the need for additional configuration in build systems.

      With .mjs for modules, the mental model is: // Decide which extension to use: extension = isModule ? '.mjs' : '.js' // Figure out if a given file is a module: isModule = extension === '.mjs'

      With .js for client-side modules, the mental model becomes: // Decide which extension to use: extension = (isBrowserOnlyCode || !isModule) ? '.js' : '.mjs' // Is the given file a module: isModule = extension === '.mjs' || (isBrowserOnlyCode && lookWhereAndHowFileGetsLoaded);

      If you’re willing to jump through configuration and mental model hoops, feel free to use a different extension. I think avoiding the hassle is a fair recommendation and a sensible default.

          I don't understand what hoops you're describing. Ember apps have used .js for modules for 5 years. It doesn't make sense to me to introduce churn into my ecosystem for these abstract reasons.
