    The proposed `intrinsicsize` HTML attribute makes such a big UX difference. No more user-visible reflows as images/videos load! I just added it to all <img>s on the @v8js website using a simple script: https://github.com/v8/v8.dev/pull/144 …https://twitter.com/css/status/1085277957873115141 …

    <img intrinsicsize> fights jank It's worth checking out the two videos linked up here to see how much nicer the loading experience can be in a fluid environment where knowing the height at layout time is tough. https://codepen.io/eeeps/pen/qLKwEZ …

        Someone should take my script, generalize it, and publish it to npm to allow for something like: npx add-intrinsicsize src/*.html This would enable adding the intrinsicsize attribute at build time by inspecting the local image files. Great for static websites!

        what's the concrete difference with just setting width and height already, if you know the size?

        If you *only* use the `width` and `height` attributes (and no CSS that impacts the dimensions), your images/videos are not responsive. intrinsicsize is useful for responsive web sites.

        How about this: img, video { intrinsic-width: attr(width px); intrinsic-height: attr(height px); } Shorthand: intrinsic-size: attr(width px) attr(height px);

        So, basically a non-hacky way of setting aspect ratios?
