We are making contributions to Webpack to improve Next.js's (and the rest of the ecosystem's!) build performance and resource utilization. *16 times better memory usage with no degradation in performance* Brought to you by the one and only @connordav_ispic.twitter.com/9EOGY4eJzP

Furthermore, memory gets released much more quickly and processes don't crash anymore under lots of stress (many pages). So you could argue it's *infinitely* better now.

Incredible! Thank you @connordav_is! I've always thought it would be fun to make a book or blog series about these optimization PRs with huge impact.

Yeah it basically comes down to there being no good resources on profiling/optimization. In this case Connor and I spent half a week tracking down memory usage until I realized all files got combined/written all at once without limits

Great work! Would clearer guides on memory profiling have helped here? Sure we have room to improve on DevTools/Node tracing docs.

I should note that Chrome devtools memory tooling totally saved the day 🙏🏻 Maybe the problem we had is that it was hard to track down where a buffer got created (which was the root of the issue).

The main thing that could be helpful is docs on what the memory panels do / how to read them, for me it’s relatively easy to figure this out, but I can see how it could be daunting for other devs

Agreed. Memory panel is the #1 question I get in my DevTools workshops. I've spoken a few times with folks about making it easier to understand / track down causes of memory leaks. Would love to sync more if it's of interest Addy!

Would love to collect this feedback (and any more on memory profiling areas we could improve). Over to @mathias who has been thinking about this recently :)
