The speed at which hooks is influencing the community is astonishing. It hasn't even been a week!https://twitter.com/mathias/status/1057611461999112192 …

JavaScript array destructuring implicitly invokes the iteration protocol, which comes at a cost. Now that this pattern is becoming more common (React Hooks, anyone?), @v8js is optimizing it to minimize the overhead. @bmeurer explains: https://bit.ly/array-destructuring-for-multi-value-returns … pic.twitter.com/NifqWfxJ4x

to me this is actually very sad. You have people from Google promoting the usage of the language as is, instead of transpilers, and other people, also from Google, optimizing the language only if some big player is using it somehow, making every other project look irrelevant 🤷‍♂️

so while I appreciate their effort in trying to make V8 as fast as possible for most common cases, that document also demonstrates that using the language as is is a bad bet when it comes to raw performance, at least until some "big-fish" promotes some pattern.

I don't think the "raw performance" comment you made is true. There is a hierarchy of importance when it comes implementing features in any software (V8 in this case), so why wouldn't it make sense to prioritize a feature once it becomes heavily used by the community?

that leads me to imagin a dev <=> guru conversation these days: "is that feature in the language specs?" Sure, for years now, and widely compatible! "is React using that pattern?" Not yet ... "... then Babel, here I come!" Yup, good choice, if you need better raw performance.

I would need to see that type of conversation actually take place between a dev/"guru" to actually believe the outcome you're claim would happen. Unless you're making a case for Polymer/web components vs. React because that's a different point then.

hey Daniel, I'm talking facts regarding raw performance. So, if I know something performs better with old syntax, I'll use the old syntax when performance matters and wait for privileged developers to use anything new so it'll get optimized. Got it? It's *that* easy.

Yeah that makes total sense. But then I don't get why you wrote "this is actually very sad" when the V8 team said they are going to optimize a feature that "privileged developers" in the community have been using.

it's sad because it's like V8 is thinking: if React now promotes this pattern that has been around for years but we never cared about data/usage around it, and even if React transpiles mandatory due JSX that is also not standard, we gonna optimize and reward them. That. Is. Sad.

You’re making assumptions that simply aren’t true. We care about real-world usage of language features and optimize for it.

let's remember React needs mandatory transpilation due JSX and everything else that has never been standardized. So there is no real-world optimization there, at least not for React, and that paper is explicitly about React. I don' want to wait for React to see better performance
