In some ways, it's easier to think of the Kenosha shooter as a dedicated terrorist than what he probably is — a confused 17-year-old who thought he was doing the right thing, according to some twisted set of values he inherited and/or picked up off the internet

For what it's worth, I'm not saying what he did wasn't terrorism, and I would say — and have said — the same about teenagers who join ISIS etc. I am not absolving him of anything or trying to defend his actions

Very similar to those 17 year olds in other countries whom we label terrorists. Of course there are confused teens in every country; America is unique in providing them with easy access to guns.

OK. Let's run with that, even though it ignores the racist side of this issue. Why would a confused 17-year-old need access to an assault rifle?

Why would you say it ignores the racism? Obviously racism is part of it — part of whatever belief system he inherited and/or adopted from the internet, along with an unhealthy fascination with assault weapons

you know i'm the father of two young men. i can't imagine either of them, even on their worst day, making these same choices. it's an overt expression of evil that doesn't, imo, map to the classic 'young man w/ undeveloped brain' kindergartners understand right + wrong.

Why? The confused teenager trope is not unusual for suspects who fit his demographic. Would the same be said of a 17-year-old BIPOC suspect described as a gang member? They’re often confused, too.
