Pretty much this. Writing real journalism and reading it takes effort. A lot of people would rather write and read something else. This is the biggest problem affecting journalism.

Well, the advertising business just moved, it’s not destroyed. It simple followed the distribution networks and spent money where the eyeballs were. The reality for publishers is that news is not a business model. It could be, but isn’t yet.

Key factor: they made (more) visible media’s ad dependency. Then, the (sometimes) symmetric relationship of power (ad - media) was transformed into an asymmetric one. From there the distribution was hit and then the content.
