I think the reason I don’t like it is that it’s less of an ‘interesting mechanic’ and more of a ‘hey this is a challenge you could always upgrade your stats so it doesn’t suck, or you could buy actual fun interesting things...’
I assume it was put in so the Wrench was more balanced, but don’t put in Achilles heel mechanics just to give me a tree option that is just to make the base mechanic not suck.
