I watched it a long time ago, but I don't remember a ton. I found it more campy that scary, and being a fan of Lovecraft's writing and the Cthulhu mythos, I was disappointed. Maybe I should watch it again.

Eh I'd totally agree with that explanation. I watched a lot of YouTube analysis videos on it awhile back and the premise and twist seemed amazing; but when I watched it I felt like it was a potentially great premise with pretty mediocre or even bad execution.
