I love that I can replace the word 'platformer' with 'horror' and it reads the same way.

Are horror games insular? I think horror games appeal to nongamers precisely because they speak to an emotion as opposed to many platformers that require knowledge of other games and game design for their value

I think some aspects of the tropey designs are; I don't think appealing to a common emotion makes a blind genre-based design any less insular. I.e. "We have to have X because all horror games have X"
