What's the best way to develop a video game project?
Lol yeah, I only added that one to cover the extremes. Surprised by that.

I did a lot of winging it for Age of Nomads so far only because it's my "dream game" from childhood and never meant to be fully finished (always has room for additions, improvements). But with it I knew a few specific things I wanted to happen while the rest would be experiment.

Prototyping and seeing where things go is a common strategy. Jonathan Blow, for example, has a lot of examples where he thought he had a great idea and then after doing a prototype realized it wasn't awesome after all. Not a lot of planning before prototype tho.
