I've had a hunch of this truth for a while, but today it was solidified in my brain as indisputable capital T truth: Following NES/GB/etc limitations is boring and ugly and your shit gets interesting exactly at the moment when you break those barriers.
My point of view when designing anything retro stylized is ‘retro look with modern gameplay standards’. In fact, one of my jams and most popular games was based on looking at a mechanic and saying ‘why would we even include (old mechanic) in the game??’

Yes! Every time I see a "retro" game I instinctually look for how they decided to be different than its inspiration.
