I've gotta say, the "most popular" list on http://itch.io is really blowing my mind right now. https://itch.io/games Seems like maybe "cheap and whacky horror" might be a real underserved niche right now?

You can make at least several 15 minute (algorithm friendly!) videos just picking apart the edutainment games it's aping and making theories on who the broom is and if this is about real life events/a creepy pasta. It's Slender but based on Sonic School House.
I've watched some videos on this and I don't get it. I understand how 'lore' can make a game's reputation on YouTube (look at Hello Neighbor) but this game isn't even "scary". Flipping the screen red and screaming 'get out' does not a horror game make.

As much as the horror genre has become more mature as of late, I think there's a very large number of people out there who think cheap jumpscare thrills are what horror is. Probably especially among teens...

It's a transaction. It's nakedly made to be a youTube phenom and there is a large enough market of people trying to make streaming their job that the devs can make bank by people just trying to fill an upload schedule.

I want to say this game was a jam entry so it might not have been entirely intended by the dev, however there are a number of copycats starting to drop on there that I'm sure ARE intended.
