I got into making games because I loved the depth and emotion in the stories. Yet, none of the games I've made have included any sense of a real, deep story. I feel like this wrong needs to be righted. Question: make a game only for story, or strongly focused on gameplay?

Exactly. Hindsight is 20/20, though. It's not always as easy as this.

Ubiquity is the largest hindrance to our medium because if players didn't expect it they would be open to new things vs. thinking something is wrong if it isn't exactly like every other game Not sure how relevant this is to your convo but i will seize every chance i can to say it

This type of garbage thinking has been popularized by reactionary critic personalities that in order to entertain an audience will turn every creative decision in a work into a "what were they thinking?!" joke This also why so many indie devs are terrified of making sincere games

Let's put it this way, once I talked with someone who said 'well, typically games in X genre do this for music/art/etc'. To me, that kind of answer to a problem isn't what we should strive for as designers/creators (maybe depends on the project needs though?)
