I got into making games because I loved the depth and emotion in the stories. Yet, none of the games I've made have included any sense of a real, deep story. I feel like this wrong needs to be righted. Question: make a game only for story, or strongly focused on gameplay?

I agree. Sorry, my answer was dismissive. The "usually X does Y' isn't sufficient as a solution especially on high levels like genre. Good game designers are much more precise. And even if the solution hasn't been made before they know how to analyze and find it.

Remember when FPSes wanted more tense moment to moment gameplay? They added ambiguous health counters, low life, and regenerating health. It was good for a minute, but then it was way over used, and now we're back where we understand when and how to use the specific health mechs

Let's put it this way, once I talked with someone who said 'well, typically games in X genre do this for music/art/etc'. To me, that kind of answer to a problem isn't what we should strive for as designers/creators (maybe depends on the project needs though?)
