I believe that regardless of if you enjoy Dark Souls or not, their design of the core loop variant on the typical RPG grind is worth studying.
No, more like the loop of going into a level, killing enemies to get souls, taking them back to the shrine to spend on level up, so you can get further in the level, to get more souls, etc...

It just feels different than other RPGs where you push through a level but can usually upgrade at any time, DS changes that by requiring the return to the shrine (which plays into the gambling risk aspect of the game)
