    Thing I miss about working in my old career w/ a P. Eng --once you get your P. Eng the job interviews change a lot. Way less crap questions, a lot more talking about projects and what went right / what went wrong. No more equivalent of whiteboard interview style questions.

    Oh I wanted this for a long time. I love xfatalwarnings for pattern match failures but if a codebase has a lot of noise like deprecated then it doesnt work. Cc: you might be interested in this

    In in case you're using -Xfatal-warnings with the linter options active, this plugin becomes a must for complex code bases (HT ), should be a language feature IMO:

    Augh. I voted for this guy originally because he was suppose to get rid of the first past the post crappy voting system. Which he reneged on. Instead he has given me a pipeline and now a new oil sands mine producing until 2066. Not good Not good at all.

    The ultimate resource for leaning a new language: program a roguelike! Honestly this should be a university course. Graph algorithms, state machines. Learn two at once do a backend in X and a frontend in JS (or reasonML, or PS or TS).

    The course that got me hooked on programming later in life was this: part A - Standard ML, part B - Racket, Part C - Ruby, incl. implementing the final project of Part B (FP) using Ruby (OOP). Also the reason why I use emacs (for the standard-ml mode)

    Ethics in software really means ethics in business. You will always find someone to code your sketchy AF facial recognition / social credit score / license plate reading drone. Expecting the well paid / comfy low on the ladder worker to fix this is a fantasy. Only hope is regs.

    When I was a professional engineer, it was perfectly ethical to go build a prison to for the Gaddafi regime in Libya. The guidelines certainly weren't going to get in the way of big business, especially for work outside of their borders. Crickets. Crickets. Crickets.

    subtweeting myself here but folks: an ethics class in a 4-year university, and geographically bound "unions" with practice guidelines for SW devs isn't going to fix the ethical garbage fire that is tech.
