How is this even possible? People who cannot imagine things can still do imaginary rotations of shapes? I cannot reconcile this with how I do mental rotation at all.

Aphantasic here. I do not "rotate" anything in fact,I try to arrive rationally at the solution of the mental rotation task.
I don’t rotate the shape either. I analyze it, take it apart and rebuild it facing the correct way.
