It is indeed too fitting today to recall the epic battle of Mount Hindreen against the previous regime of Iraq by the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Communist Party in 1966. That day is indeed a historic day for us where the previous regime faced a great defeat.

Today marks the 47th anniversary of the execution of Leyla Qasim, a symbol of resilience for all Kurdish women. Ms. Qasim, for the pursuit of her nation, chose death over bowing down to the oppressor. May peace be upon the soul of Ms. Qasim and all the martyrs of liberty.

Today marks the 47th anniversary of the bombardment of the city of Qaladiza where hundreds of civilians, including college professors and students were martyred. That heinous crime was the start of the genocidal campaign of the previous regime against the people of Kurdistan.

The crime of Anfal is one of the darkest chapters of the history of Iraq’s previous regime and it is a testimony of the oppression suffered by the people of Kurdistan. It is, therefore, a legal and moral obligation of the Iraqi gov't to begin reparations for this odious crime.

It is indeed shameful that even after the bombardment of Halabja with chemical weapons and the genocide against the people of Kurdistan, chauvinistic thinking remains dominant in Iraq, and that the rights of the people of Kurdistan continue to be denied.
