Please get your info correct, fruit and vegetables are only stored for a maximum of three weeks before it goes bad at the warehouse. Refrigeration system keeps the temperature at 2 degrees Celsius at all times. Bananas are not treated with any gas they ripen on there own.
-
Second the oxygen levels are normal because I would not be able to clean the coolers where the produce is kept. The washing of lettuce is mandatory by law to wash off any dirt, it's also to remove any bacteria that may be on it. Finally stores have a strict time frame for food
-
This time frame is a minimum of 15 days before the food spoils. If it's within that timeframe the store will send it back to us.
-
Let's look at lettuce for example. Lettuce where I work comes from three different areas Mexico, USA and Canada, it's trucked in on a refrigeration unit. 2-4days on the road. When it arrives it gets a quality check from there it's washed and dried then packaged. 1-2 days.
-
Finally sent to the grocery store for a total of 6-7 days.
-
Apple's on the other hand can come from New Zealand. So this is how it happens. We start at the orchard where they are picked. Their green at this stage. They are then cooled to 2 degrees Celsius, washed in cold water. Packaged and shipped by ship. 5-8 days. Quality control
-
Checks the apples for any pests at the boarder. 1-2 days. When the apples arrive here at the warehouse they are turning red. From here we do another quality check for damages, 1-2 days. Then off to the grocery store total days 12-13.
-
Blueberry have a different way of getting here. They fly. Just like lettuce and apples they go through quality checks, inspections, packaged and sent to grocery stores 9-10 days. Pineapples from Costa Rica are the same amount of days. So in closing do your research.
