I’ve never understood why a car can’t be invented that takes a battery to start and go but then as you travel the tires turn turbines that would power the car and build energy. Never needing gasoline.

That would be an impossible perpetual motion machine... the act of generation is less than 100% efficient and there is also resistance to motion so that would slow the car down quickly.
