Ok, y’all writing articles abot this that say “verification is a badge proving identity hat the users have decided means something else” are either being disingenuous or don’t actually know what verification entails and I’m already sick of t.

Verified accounts are given tools to deal with content and harassment that other accounts don’t. Also, plenty of people absolutely willing to confirm their identity never make it through the verification process for reasons that are often unclear.
-
Anecdotally, since the process is utterly opaque to users, verified accounts are MUCH harder to get action on when they behave in abusive ways, or do things the rest of us would be our accounts limited or suspended for.
-
Telling people that verification is nothing more than having verified your ID is lazy reporting so bad it becomes misinformation.
