why not just bury the carbon? Recycling it temporarily doesn't seem to do much for climate outcomes

If it's "fixed" by plants it's transformed into (for example) food... The CO2 in the atm originated from plant matter. Nothing is ever lost.

My question is what is the carbon footprint for making (and running) this machine in the first place?

yeah need a full lifecycle analysis. That's a lot of metal and motion and heat generated to make carbon for plants...
