Scientists made an awesome error that could save our planet from plastic hellpic.twitter.com/fP33OGh5yH

Scientists made an enzyme that can eat plastic - by accident
A team of researchers from from Britain’s University of Portsmouth and the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory made an enzyme that can eat up plastic bottles.

You do know that the bacteria eats plastic and it also excretes plastic just in smaller amounts. The only solution to plastic pollution is to dramatically reduce the use of plastic.

The enzymes may break the plastic down into its individual molecules. This would allow for molecular separation. We can use a myriad of tools to bond molecules in different ways. For all, we know the plastic could become water and carbon.

Yes that is possible but we also need to address the situation we have now. If and when the enzyme is proven to break down plastic in such a way we should be dramatically reducing single use plastics.

No one is arguing that point. My only point was that in all likelihood we are not talking about bacterium making microplastics. That wouldn't be a breakthrough. Which means this mag very well be something new.

Wrong solution. We need to use fewer of them in the first place, re-cycle those we do use, and certainly not litter them hoping that one day an enzyme will eat them. It’s the whole throw away / single use issue that’s the problem.

Using fewer doesn’t get rid of the ones already used

Agree this may be a solution for the plastic already in existence --- but we need to switch to 💯 naturally degradable!

But that has to mean they have to be made of an organic substance. No point in having bottles that break down into micro beads... that shit doesn’t belong in our soil or water. Better to recycle or switch to multi-use vessels

They need to figure that out because you're right-they're finding the MICRO-PLASTIC to be so small that it passes through our guts and animals/fish making us SICK! Every plastic thing we eat/drink from is poisoning us slowly😳https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2018/08/20/636845604/beer-drinking-water-and-fish-tiny-plastic-is-everywhere …
