Why is it still legal to mutilate a dog's ears? This makes me beyond sad.

Their ears are so big blood doesn't circulate all the way to the edges, so when unclipped they get sores and infections. I had a couple and didn't cut them, learning through experience why many owners do.

My uncle was a breeder of Great Danes and this is the first I've ever heard of this.

I'm sure many people do it just for aesthetic reasons, but that's what the vet told us when we took them in and asked why they kept getting scabs on their ears.

May just be luck that the dogs I was around didn't suffer this, but I do recall having to take extra care of their tails as they were easily damaged from being wagged too enthusiastically, and then hitting stuff. Those things were weapons when they whipped you across the leg.
